These three guys were standing on the beach looking out at the surfers. What caught my eye was the banding of stones, sea and sky; they just happened to be in a good position to offset the horizontal arrangement. Random figures can sometimes make the landscape by providing a sense of human scale, though viewed from behind they can also suggest anonymous representations of ourselves.
This shot of an intent but relaxed dialogue between two men in the music business was taken at a one-day minifest for the Small Nations Festival in Llandovery in 2010. Lines and texture are good ways of defining a composition, but I lean towards using tonal contrasts wherever possible. White shirts are always a favourite, while the white tarp and ropes were a bonus.
